What is the best auto magazine to subscribe to?
As a gift for my boyfriend I would like to purchase one automotive magazine for him. He frequently reads Automotive, Car & Driver, Motor Trend and Road and Track. Which is the best??
You sure get some strange answers, don’t you?
There’s always somebody out there who thinks the car magazines take kickbacks from car companies for favorable reviews. It’s usually someone who never drove the cars.
The magazine to get your BF is the car magazine he likes best. Nobody on this board knows what that is.
Taken in alphabetical order:
Automobile: Highly literate. Motto: “No Boring Cars.” Upscale bias (I once read that the average subscriber has 6 cars) leaves us proles feeling somewhat patronized with its reports on shooting lodges, cigars, and microbreweries. Georg Kacher and Robert Cumberford are two of the best in their field. No road test stats. Rating: 9.0.
AutoWeek: Weekly format mitigates shortage of editorial pages (You’ll read it here first). Autofile feature conveniently summarizes real owner experience. Contributors include the estimable Denise McCluggage. Best Classifieds. Rating: 9.0.
Car and Driver: Frequently irreverent, generally informative, nearly always entertaining. Once upset GM enough to pull all advertising for a month. (They showed a captive GM import in its ‘natural habitat’ – a junkyard.) Now No. 1 in circulation. Excellent investigative reports by Editor-at-Large Pat Bedard. Comparison tests match cars of similar cost — or strange bedfellows. Useful & innovative rolling start acceleration test. Rating: 9.5.
Motor Trend: Lots of stories about fast aftermarket cars that you can’t buy, or which don’t work very well. Road tests have trustworthy track metrics, not much criticism. Subject to spells of junior-high level word misuse and grammatical lapses. Suspect ‘Car of the Year’ award, mostly useful as great advertising copy for winner. Rating: 8.5.
Road & Track: Senior US car magazine (60 years running). Other than bigger pages, not much to distinguish it from stablemate CandD now. Good perspective with contributing editors LeMans winner Paul Frere and America’s first World Drivers’ Champion, Phil Hill. Other quality contributors keep showing up. Entertaining April Fool Road Tests have featured motorized pogo stick, San Francisco Trolley, and the Space Shuttle’s massive launch/transporter. Rating: 9.5.
If I only got one car magazine (I subscribe to CandD, Automobile, Autoweek, and R&T, plus Consumer Reports and Automotive News) I would have a hard time choosing between R&T and Cand D, I’d probably go with R&T for columnist Peter Egan.
