Has the winner of the world cup ever lost during the tournament?
I was wondering since Spain lost the opening game. Has a team ever lost a game during the world cup and still gone on to win the whole tournament?
Argentina in 1978, West Germany in 1974 and West Germany again in 1954 all lost once along the way, each time in the group stage.
Added: But the lost games are not the opening games for them. West Germany
Argentina in 1978, in the last game of the group stage, Argentina 0:1 Italy in the last round.
West Germany in 1974, West Germany 0:1 East Germany in the last round.
West Germany in 1954, West Germany 3:8 Hungary in the second game, but they beat Hungary 3:2 final in the final.
So we have the reason to worry about spain. Anyway, good luck to them and hope them to create the history.
